When someone asks why they should meditate, the question can be answered from two very different places. The first is the modern scientific literature, which has studied meditation with rigorous methodology for several decades. The second is the Indian philosophical tradition, which has described the effects of sustained practice for thousands of years. Both point toward the same general territory, though they use different maps.
What Neuroscience Has Found
The neuroscientific research on meditation is extensive. Among the most consistent findings: regular meditation practice reduces activity in the default mode network, the brain region associated with mind-wandering and self-referential thinking (what is sometimes called the "narrative self" or the inner critic). This reduction correlates with lower reported anxiety and greater emotional stability.
Structural Brain Changes
Longer-term practitioners show measurable structural changes in the brain. The prefrontal cortex, associated with executive function and self-regulation, shows increased gray matter density. The amygdala, the brain's threat-detection center, shows reduced reactivity to emotional stimuli. These are not subjective reports. They are measurable changes in the physical structure of the brain.
Vedanta's Explanation
From the Vedantic perspective, these changes are symptoms of something more fundamental. The antahkaran, the inner instrument of mind, intellect, and ego, becomes more refined through consistent practice. The chitta (mind-stuff) accumulates less rajas (agitation) and tamas (inertia) and becomes more sattvic (clear, luminous). In this clearer state, the inherent qualities of the self, clarity, equanimity, compassion, naturally manifest more fully.
The Reduction of Vasanas
The Advaita Vedanta tradition specifically describes the reduction of vasanas (deep mental impressions or tendencies) as one of the primary effects of sustained meditation. Vasanas are the accumulated patterns of habitual reaction that cause us to respond to new situations as though they were old ones. As meditation practice deepens, these patterns lose their compulsive quality, and the practitioner gains more genuine freedom of response.
Why Both Accounts Point the Same Way
What is interesting is that the neuroscientific language of "reduced amygdala reactivity" and the Vedantic language of "reduced vasanas" are describing the same phenomenon from different levels of analysis. The neuroscientist measures brain activity. The Vedantin describes the quality of consciousness. Neither account is wrong. They are complementary.
The Practical Implication
For the practitioner, what this means is that the benefits of meditation are not miraculous or mysterious. They are the predictable result of training the mind in a specific direction, the way physical training produces predictable results in the body. The tradition, however, adds something that the scientific literature tends to leave out: the deepest benefit is not improved wellbeing but the direct recognition of one's true nature.
