Before the Goddess
Today’s episode: Before the Goddess.
Before light can be born, darkness must first become unbearable. And for the gods, darkness was absolute. They were losing their war. Not like kings lose a battle. They were losing like a fire loses to a storm—hissing, shrinking, surrendering to the cold.
The darkness had a name: Mahishasura. The buffalo demon. A being of pure, unstoppable force. For a thousand years, he had performed a penance that would break mountains. He stood on one leg, arms raised to the heavens, through scorching summers and bone-cracking winters. He did not eat. He did not sleep. He only burned with a single desire.
When the creator, Brahma, finally appeared, the air crackled. The demon’s eyes, shut for a millennium, opened. They were pits of fire. “Ask,” Brahma’s voice echoed across the ages. “Your devotion has earned you a boon.”
Mahishasura’s voice was like stone grinding on stone. “I ask,” he rasped, “that no man, no god, no demon… no male of any kind… shall ever be my end.”
Brahma fell silent. The universe held its breath. He saw the future this boon would create—a future of fire and ruin. But the law was the law. A promise must be kept. “So be it,” Brahma whispered. And with those two words, he sealed the fate of heaven.
Mahishasura’s victory was swift, a brutal storm that shattered the divine realms. His armies swarmed across the earth, then turned their eyes to the sky. To Svarga. The home of the gods.
For a hundred years, war raged. The sky screamed with the clash of divine weapons. But every god they sent, Mahishasura defeated. Every celestial weapon they used, he broke. Indra, king of the gods, was thrown from his great white elephant. The gods fell back, their divine light dimming, their hearts filled with a cold, unfamiliar feeling: fear. Brahma's boon was an unbreakable shield. Their enemy was immortal.
Defeated, shattered, they fled. They gathered in Brahma’s realm, the faces of gods now wearing the masks of ghosts. Indra sat with his head in his hands. Vishnu, the preserver, stood silent, his eyes seeing timelines of endless defeat. And Shiva, the destroyer, leaned on his trident, his stillness more terrifying than any storm.
“He has taken everything,” Indra’s voice was raw. “The sun, the moon, the wind… they now bow to him. What do we do?”
Silence. A thick, heavy silence, filled with the ghosts of their lost power.
It was Vishnu who finally broke it. His voice was quiet, a ripple in a dead ocean. “There is a power we have not used. We have fought as individuals. We have never fought… as one.”
The gods looked up. A flicker of something stirred in their eyes.
“His boon protects him from any male,” Vishnu continued, his voice growing stronger. “So we will not send a male. We will create something that has never existed. A power born from all of us. Every last spark of our divine fire, combined into a single, blazing weapon.”
The idea hung in the air. A desperate, impossible gamble. To give up the very essence of what made them who they were. One by one, they closed their eyes. They reached deep inside themselves, past their pride, past their fear, to the pure, ancient fire at their core.
And they unleashed it.
From Vishnu’s forehead, a beam of blinding white light erupted. From Shiva’s third eye, a torrent of fire roared into the void. From Brahma, from Indra, from every god present, a river of pure energy poured out. It was not the light of a sun. It was not the flash of lightning. It was the light of creation itself, turned inside out.
The streams of power twisted together in the center of the cosmos. A sound began to fill the silence—not a roar, but a deep, resonant hum that shook the stars in their orbits. The light blazed, brighter than a billion suns, coalescing, gathering, taking on a shape. A form was being born in that fire. A form that the three worlds had never seen. Something terrible. And beautiful.
Next Episode: The Birth of Shakti. From the combined fire of the gods, a goddess of unimaginable power rises. And for the first time in a thousand years, the demon Mahishasura feels a flicker of fear.
