There is a particular quality to the early morning hour that the tradition recognizes and names. The Brahma Muhurta, literally the hour of Brahma, refers to the period approximately ninety minutes before sunrise. The Ayurvedic and yogic traditions both describe this as a time when the tamas of sleep has lightened but the rajas of the active day has not yet taken hold. The mind is, briefly, in a naturally sattvic state.

The Significance of Brahma Muhurta

Waking during this period and meeting it with prayer rather than immediately reaching for a phone or the anxieties of the day is, the tradition suggests, a way of setting the tone for everything that follows. What you do with the first fifteen minutes of waking has an outsized influence on the quality of the hours ahead.

Before Leaving the Bed

The morning begins, traditionally, even before leaving the bed. As you open your eyes, you bring your hands together in anjali mudra and offer a brief acknowledgment of the new day. A simple verse from the scriptures says: upon waking, look at both your hands. Consider that Lakshmi is in the forepart of the hand, Saraswati in the middle, and at its root is Govinda. This gesture of looking at the hands before looking at anything else is a reminder that the capacity to act and create is itself a gift.

Touching the Earth

Touching the floor before stepping out of bed is another small practice: you are touching the earth, which is understood as the mother who holds everything, and acknowledging that relationship as the first act of the day.

Bathing as Ritual

Bathing, ideally with cold water or at least cool water, carries both physical and ritual significance. It clears the subtle residue of sleep and prepares the body for worship.

The Morning Prayer Session

The actual morning prayer session can take many forms. The Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatam, used to wake Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati each morning, has become a beloved morning prayer for devotees across India, with its imagery of morning light and lotus flowers opening. Listening to it while going through morning routines can transform a mechanical set of tasks into something more sacred.

The Principle of Intentionality

The key principle is intentionality. Walking out of the house having asked, even briefly, for clarity, compassion, and the capacity to act rightly creates a different inner starting point than walking out while scrolling through notifications.
