The first time: on a Monday, Shiva's day, or on a Thursday if you wear it for Guru:

1. Bathe, light a diya, and sprinkle a few drops of Ganga jal or clean water on the beads.
2. Hold it in your palms and set your sankalp, the one intention it will carry with you.
3. Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 11 times, or "Om Hreem Namah" 9 times, and wear it.

Which hand: traditionally men wear it on the right wrist and women on the left. If your family or guru follows a different custom, follow that.

Through the day: whenever you have a quiet moment, turn the beads one by one with "Om Namah Shivaya". It is a small japa you can do anywhere.
